THE KING OF THE SURF GUITAR!
Dick Dale, born Richard Anthony Monsour on May 4, 1937, is an American surf rock guitarist, known as The King of the Surf Guitar. He pioneered the surf music style, drawing on Eastern musical scales and experimenting with reverberation. Though his favorite instrument was the piano, and secondly the trumpet, he worked closely with Leo Fender to produce custom made amplifiers, including the first-ever 100-watt guitar amplifier. He pushed the limits of electric amplification technology, helping to develop new equipment that was capable of producing distorted, "thick, clearly defined tones" at "previously undreamed-of volumes." The "breakneck speed of his single-note staccato picking technique", as well as his showmanship with the guitar, is considered a precursor to heavy metal music, influencing guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen.
Dick moved to Los Angeles in 1955 and began playing on a soapbox for Disc Jockey Art Laboe, as well as for Mark Hendrix, then manager of the Orpheum Theatre. He also opened for Jailhouse Rock and Love Me Tender. Dick then began playing in local country western rockabilly bars, where he met Texas Tiny in 1955, who gave him the name "Dick Dale" because he thought it was a good name for a country singer. His performances at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa in mid to late 1961 are credited with the creation of the surf music phenomenon. Dick explained that his music comes from Gene Krupa's drum rhythms, the wild animals roars and sounds, and the indigineous peoples dancing. A very small portion of his music also came from surfing the waves, etc. He later said: "There was a tremendous amount of power I felt while surfing, and that feeling of power was simply transferred into my guitar". His playing style reflected the experience he had when surfing, and projecting the power of the ocean to people. He played how he felt. He was in the music business for 65 years.
Surf music's popularity waned when the British Invasion came to North America, however Dick's career experienced a resurgence when the use of his recording of "Miserlou" in the 1994 Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction gained him a new audience. The following year, John Peel praised his playing following a gig in the Garage, London. Peel later selected "Let's Go Trippin'" as the theme tune for his BBC Radio 4 series Home Truths. That same year, Dick recorded a surf-rock version of Camille Saint-Saëns' "Aquarium" from The Carnival of the Animals for the musical score of the enclosed roller coaster Space Mountain at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.
Dick was inducted into the Musician's Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennesseee in 2009, and is also a 2011 inductee into the Surfing Walk of Fame in Huntington Beach, California, in the Surf Culture category.
In June 2009, Dick began a West Coast tour from Southern California to British Columbia, with approximately 20 concert dates. "Forever Came Calling" (or FCC). He was scheduled to play the Australian One Great Night On Earth Festical to raise funds to benefit those affected by the Black Satruday bushfiles and other natural disasters.
Dick said that he was forced to keep touring to the end of his life, because of his inability to afford his and Lana's medical costs, as well as other legal issues. He had many health issues, including diabetes, rectal cancer, renal failure, kidney failure, kidney stones, and vertebrae damage that made performing excruciatingly painful. His wife Lana also suffers from Multiple Sclerosis. One of his sayings was "your body follows your mind", and in relation to this saying, Dick said that he never used alcohol or other drugs, for health reasons, and discouraged their use by band members and road crew. In 1972, he stopped eating red meat. He studied Kenpo karate for over 30 years. In early 2008, he experienced a recurrence of colorectal cancer and completed a surgical, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment regimen. Dick died in Loma Linda, California on March 16, 2019, at the age of 81. He was treated for heart failure and kidney failure prior to his death, and it was discovered at his death that his rectal cancer had metastasized to his bones. At the time of his death, Dale had tour dates scheduled into November 2019.

Dick Dale “Guitar Legend” Writeup
Dick Dale, an avid surfer, was born in Boston Massachusetts in 1937, moved to California 1954 with his parents and great expectations for a bright future. Dick is Polish/Lebanese. Polish is the mother’s side and Lebanese father's side.
As a kid he had taught himself to play the drums listening to Gene Krupa. Dale bought his first ukulele, being left handed and drumming to the beat of Gene Krupa he began strumming left-handed upside down and backwards to a Gene Krupa beat.
Dale also loved the genius and playing of Les Paul and the vocals of Mary Ford.
Dale also became excited watching his uncle playing the legendary song Misirlou on an Oud instrument. Dale then learned to play Misirlou on his guitar.
He pioneered an entire genre of American music with his unique style of staccato picking and reverb-drenched sound, which earned him the title as “King of the Surf Guitar” by his surfer buddies.
“Dick Dale and the Del-Tones” re-opened the Famed Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa, California, and became the star attraction playing nightly to thousands of screaming teenagers.
Dick is the Pioneer of it all including the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean and
Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, The Kingston Trio and The Ventures, who opened for Dick in the late 1950s. Dick taught Jimmy Hendrix how to play many slides etc. in the beginning before Jimmy got into the drug scene, Dick said.
Dick Dale served as co-designer to Leo Fender, and helped create and build the super-powered electronics and equipment that would revolutionize musical instruments and the live and recorded sounds in the 50’s & 60’s.
Over a vast career of 50 years he has received an extensive number of Lifetime awards, and was nominated for a Grammy for the music in “Back To The Beach”.
He’s been inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame in San Diego, Hollywood Rock of Fame, White House Congressional Hall of Records, and First Presidential Historical Society as a Lifetime Member, and was voted by over 100,000 members of his peers into Nashville’s Musicians Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Museum.
Dale has been featured as Huntington Beach’s Grand Marshal, featured at the yearly NAMM Convention, in countless movies, television, commercials, magazines, newspapers, grand openings and voted the number 1 top concert out of 500 concerts and bands in Madrid Spain.
Dick received the ATFL Gala Award in Washington DC by the US Ambassador Antoine Chedid on March 30th, 2014, and also is about to receive two triple platinums for both Misirlou-Pulp Fiction and Pump it black eyed peas.
Dick developed the nickname Showman by Leo Fender as he named his Amp the Showman Amplifier. Leo Fender felt Dick was like a son in those days.
Mrs. Fender came to a show to See Dick Dale and Lana Dale to say hello, and it was an honor for both Dick and Lana. Mrs. Dale said Mrs. Fender was a Special person with a Kind Heart and Soul.
To mention all of Dale’s accomplishments in a short bio would be a Titanic effort. But the Title, “Dick Dale King of the Surf Guitar,” will be forever be known as the man behind the epic instrumental “Misirlou” from Pulp Fiction and most recently with The Black Eyed Peas Platinum Cd “Pump It”.
Dick Dale is still playing strong as ever and going out on tours with his own band, promoting his latest creation, the Dick Dale Signature Fender Malibu Acoustic Electric guitar.
Dick has been touring with his beautiful wife Lana, whom he says is the
"...love of my entire life, as i haven't ever been in love before, nor wanted to marry before. I went through two horrible hilacious divorces. One tried to have me killed and took everything there was to take and that was my first wife, and the second was a drug addict with a boyfriend who stole money from me out of my safe, plus more, and again there was no love nor desire to marry to begin with, as that is a long story in itself in which i don't even want to get into. I don't like talking about either, as it's not worth talking about. I live for my love of life and wife/soulmate Lana, and I couldn't live without her! She is my Angel from Heaven all the way, and has been for 20 plus years. I just wish i would have met her in the early days. I wouldn't be alive if it weren't for her, as she saved my Life
three times.
Dick and Lana have traveled for years doing tours, as they are Johnny Appleseeds, spreading their Love for The DD Music Lovers all over the World. Each year they tour three times to each destination, and do Festivals and Casinos and Fairs in between. They do a Southern Tour first, then a North Eastern Tour and then a two-week tour usually to Washington State and back, called the California Tour. Lana runs the business and creates all Dick Dale merch as well. Lana Dale answers 2000 emails a week religiously, and dedicates her entire life to her husband, and keeping him alive with all of his 8 Major Medical issues such as a stoma bag which they both deal with all day long each day, Diabetes with Insulin, for which Lana gives Dick a penicillin shot each day at 5PM sharp, major Prostate and Bladder issues, UTI's, which develop continuously, issues with his Rectum, as it was redirected by colon which is now in front for the stoma bag. DD has Renal Failure as well plus.
Lana and Dick are a True Love Story, and do it all together. I might say it is rare in the Music Business to see such a devoted couple!
